Sarah Spohn is a Lansing native, but every day finds a new interesting person, place, or thing in towns all over Michigan, leaving her truly smitten with the mitten. She received her degrees in journalism and professional communications and provides coverage for various publications locally, regionally, and nationally — writing stories on small businesses, arts and culture, dining, community, and anything Michigan-made. You can find her in a record shop, a local concert, or eating one too many desserts at a bakery. 1in6 Support Group: Empowering families for an inclusive Midland

One in six children between the ages of three to 17 has a disability. Receiving this diagnosis, whether at birth or later in life, can be scary and overwhelming. Iris Mehler launched 1in6 Michigan Support, a support group for parents and caregivers of children with disabilities after this statistic impacted her life specifically. Today, the nonprofit organization continues to provide support, resources, and advocacy for the community.

New restaurant brings flavorful cuisine to Downtown Midland

A new tapas and brunch restaurant opened its doors at 134 W. Main St. in downtown Midland. Erik Swenson, owner and executive chef, brings flavorful cuisine on the daily menu, Seafood Saturday, Sunday Brunch, and special pop-up themed events.

The Ability Social Club, which opened in December inside the former Dunlop Pontiac, aims to provide a social setting for adults 21 and over. The center hopes to foster a sense of community for people with a wide range of abilities.

Nonprofits and neighbors provide insight, pride, propel 49507 community development

IFF, a community development financial institution based in Illinois, has invested and shown a commitment to uplifting communities by providing financial support all over the state, including Grand Rapids neighborhoods. Part of IFF’s investment in Grand Rapids has been focused on the 49507 zip code, centered in a collection of neighborhoods southeast of downtown Grand Rapids. They're working with local nonprofits including Amplify GR and LINC UP and neighborhood residents to help propel development.

There are 200 students in South Sudan who are learning literacy skills, provided by five volunteer teachers. 
Grassroots Initiative Network provides literacy education; a life of opportunity to refugees

South Sudan native, Rieek Nyoach and current Midland resident has expanded Grassroots Initiative Network to Midland. The organization works with volunteer teachers to provide basic education to rural areas and vulnerable populations who have no access to education.
