Fans pack Midland Mall as Comic Con returns for another year

If you’re from a generation who remembers malls filled with shoppers and the buzz of a packed food court, then a weekend at Comic Con might feel a little like stepping back in time.

For three days, March 6–8, the halls of the Midland Mall filled with people again as the 2026 Midland Mall Comic Con brought together fans of comics, anime, gaming, and pop culture.

The free event drew visitors from across the Great Lakes Bay Region. Throughout the mall, more than 100 vendors set up tables selling comic books, trading cards, artwork, collectibles, and handmade items inspired by favorite characters and franchises. Independent artists were a big part of the convention, giving fans a chance to buy original prints, stickers, and other pieces directly from the people who created them.

Cosplay was hard to miss. Fans walked the mall dressed as characters from movies, video games, anime, and comic books, often stopping for photos or quick conversations with other attendees who recognized the character. Some costumes were simple and fun, while others showed off detailed armor, props, and sewing work that clearly took time to put together.

Cosplay contests held during the weekend gave participants a chance to show off that work. Contestants walked the stage in different skill levels, with judges looking at both craftsmanship and how well they brought their character to life.

Beyond the costumes and shopping, there were gaming tournaments, panels and demonstrations throughout the weekend. Families with younger fans stopped by for activities, while longtime collectors browsed vendor tables looking for the next addition to their collection.

Events like Comic Con have become an important draw for the mall, bringing large crowds through the space and creating the kind of energy many people remember from busier mall days. Opening night saw the mall at capacity and the energy continued through the weekend.

By the time the event wrapped up Sunday afternoon, many attendees were already talking about what they might wear or create for next year’s convention. For fans of comics and pop culture, the Midland Mall Comic Con has become a tradition that keeps growing each year.
