Tiela Schurman establishes legacy as 2026 High School Principal of the Year
Tiela Schurman has been been named Michigan’s 2026 High School Principal of the Year.

Balloons filled the gym, the pep band played, and cheers rang out as Tiela Schurman was surprised with the news that she had been named Michigan’s 2026 High School Principal of the Year. Surrounded by family, students, and colleagues, Schurman’s dedication to students, staff, and her school community was celebrated in a moment that reflected the heart and vision she brings to Midland High every day.
Wendy Zdeb, the Executive Director of the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP), made the announcement. “When she served as a MASSP Board member, I saw Tiela’s professionalism and enthusiasm firsthand as she presented for our organization and collaborated with other principals from across the state,” she says. “Creating programs that serve students who need them most at Midland High, her school community knew she was deserving of this honor, and I’m so happy to see her win.”
Teacher David McPeak says Schurman understands the power of words and vision. “She introduced the phrase, ‘Chemics, you determine your legacy, what will it be?’ to the Friday announcements she delivers personally each week,” he says.
“This small but powerful message has become a unifying call that reminds students of their agency, responsibility, and potential. It is a perfect representation of her ability to inspire and set a tone of high expectations and belonging,” he adds.
In her letter of support for Schurman, Mary Doan, a senior at Midland High School, focused on the impact of that Friday quote.
“Ms. Schurman is special because not only does [that phrase] discuss a topic that is a main focus during your time in high school, but it is a large concept that you’ll need throughout your life,” Doan says. “It places the importance and responsibility on the students and how they can choose their future, and how their time is delegated.”
Midland Public Schools Superintendent Penny Miller-Nelson nominated Schurman for Principal of the Year. “Tiela leads Midland High with heart and genuine care, fostering a culture of belonging, joy, and success,” she says. “She works to create an environment in which every student is included and has an opportunity to thrive.”
She says Schurman also takes the same approach with staff, providing opportunities for reflection, collaboration, and leadership.
“She strongly encourages us to break out of the silos of our own classrooms so we can actually meet and collaborate with our colleagues,” Teacher James Woehrle says. “This pays off in an atmosphere of professional respect and a drive for personal excellence.”
Leading the implementation of special services support, including a Collaborative Room, Advisory Hour, and Student Tragedy Leadership, Schurman has ensured Midland High School Chemics have what they need on campus.
The Charles J. Strosacker Foundation President & CEO, and MHS parent, Kimberlee Baczewski says Schurman fosters a culture of collaboration, professional growth, and mutual respect, ensuring teachers and staff are empowered to excel in their roles.
“Tiela leads with integrity, compassion, and vision – qualities that inspire everyone around her,” she says.
Schurman will represent Michigan as the state’s nominee for the National Association of Secondary School Principals High School Principal of the Year competition, which will be awarded at the National Education Leadership Awards in April 2026, in Washington, D.C.
“With more than two decades of experience in education, Tiela has served students with genuine care and instilled confidence in them to do great things,” Zdeb says. “I’m confident Tiela will continue to do great things in Michigan and represent our state well in Washington, D.C.”
